Easily Control a Large Amount of Tabs in Google Chrome

Submitted by admin on Mon, 02/22/2010 - 14:00
    • google chrome
    • How-Tos

Do things start to get out of control for you when you have a lot of tabs open in Google Chrome? Get control back and easily manage those tabs with the Tab Menu extension.

    Before

One of the irritating things about using Chrome is that when you have a large number of tabs open it becomes harder to know exactly which one to open without a lot of “trial and error”. As you can see here some of the tabs no longer display the favicon and some of the tabs all have the same favicon. Either way you go this is not good for quickly finding the tab that you want to view.

    tab-menu-01

    Setup

The options are not complicated to sort through but some minor adjustments may help to better personalize how Tab Menu works for you. The default “Keyboard Shortcut” is “Ctrl + m” but can be expanded by adding “Alt and/or Shift” to the combination. You will also be able to modify the appearance of the “Toolbar Icon” if desired. The default setting is for a “static icon” but can be changed to always display the number of tabs open or only display the number when hovering the mouse over the “Toolbar Icon”. You can see that the three tabs open in the “Tab Bar” are also shown in a “Tabs List” below the options.

There are two important points to keep in mind while using the extension:

    • The number of open tabs shown on the “Toolbar Icon” pertains to that particular window and its’ tabs only.
    • Use of the “Keyboard Shortcut” will open the “Options Page” (instead of the drop-down window) and give you access to the “Tabs List” for a particular window there.

Do you like to browse shopping, social, and video websites while at work and need a really quick way to hide them if the boss strolls through? Now you can hide those websites easily with the Boss Button extension for Google Chrome.

    Installation & Setup

Once the extension has finished installing you will see an “empty spot” that is actually your new invisible “Boss Button” and a short extension management message. Invisible is good!

Note: During our tests the Boss Button remained invisible regardless of theme background color (excellent!).

    boss-button-02

The “Boss Button” will appear as an “empty box button” when you hover over it.

Note: There is only one option to worry with…choosing a “prim and proper” webpage as your cover.

    Chrome Alpha in Action

To get started click on the “Toolbar Button”. This is what the drop-down window will look like…enter the term that you wish to conduct a search for and hit “Enter” on your keyboard or click on “Go!”. Notice how the “Toolbar Button” looks “at rest”…

    chrome-alpha-03

Once a search is in progress the “Toolbar Button” will change in appearance. There will be a red rectangle across the lower portion with white dots moving through it. It will return to normal when the search is finished.

    chrome-alpha-04

For our example we conducted searches on three terms (a website, a location, & a business). Our first search was for information on “YouTube”.

Note: If a term generates no results the drop-down window will be blank.

Note: Shareaholic is also available for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Flock, Safari, and Songbird (see Shareaholic homepage link below).

    Shareaholic Setup

After the extension has finished installing you will see your new “Toolbar Button” and a new tab will open with information about Shareaholic. You should leave this “Information Tab” open for at least a few minutes because of the “login/create an account links”.

Note: There are no “in-browser” options to worry with.

    chrome-shareaholic-02

If you click on the “Toolbar Button” this is what the drop-down window will look like. You can go ahead and start using the extension if desired at this point but you will be limited to the services shown here. Focused New Tabs Quick-Fix for Google Chrome

Submitted by admin on Tue, 02/16/2010 - 17:00
    • google chrome
    • How-Tos

Are you frustrated with Chrome always opening “right click selected” new tabs in the background instead of focused? If so, then you will definitely want to have a look at the Tabs To The Front! extension.

    Before

The standard behavior in Chrome has any new tab that you open from from the “Right Click Menu” always appear in the background. Once in a while might not be much of a problem but if you open lots of tabs this way every day it can get very tiring using your mouse to bring all those tabs to the front.

Tabs To The Front! in Action

Here we are ready to open the link pictured above in a new tab once again…

    tabs-to-the-front-04

With the Tabs To The Front! extension that extra mouse click is eliminated and our new tab is focused and ready to go. Think of all the hassle that could be eliminated from a day’s worth of browsing!

Improve YouTube Video Viewing in Google Chrome

Submitted by admin on Fri, 02/12/2010 - 02:00
    • google chrome
    • How-Tos

Want a better way to view YouTube videos and the surrounding sections in Google Chrome? Now you can always have your video in sight while browsing the rest of the webpage with the VidzBigger extension.

    Before

Normally if you are viewing a video at YouTube you will not be able to look through all of the comments or view some parts of the webpage without losing sight of the video itself. Sometimes that is ok and at other times it is not. If you also happen to prefer viewing the “HD Version” then once again you can experience momentary frustration by having to manually select it each time. But there is an easy way to fix all of that.

    vidzbigger-01

    VidzBigger in Action

Once the extension is installed there will be a noticeable difference in the layout of the webpage and the new default size of the video (HD Version). All “sections” that originally surrounded the video to the right and below it will be combined into scrollable areas on the right side. Your video will stay in sight regardless of your browsing through the related videos, viewing the comments that have been added, etc.

    • google chrome
    • How-Tos

Are you frustrated with the default tab behavior in Chrome? Then the Modified Tab Ordering extension might be just what you have been looking for.

    Before

Most people usually have a favorite set of webpages that they open when they start their day, but different preferences in how they like for new tabs opened from the original(s) to behave.

    modified-tab-ordering-01

The default behavior in Chrome is for new tabs to open “relative” to the original and therefore be “grouped together” as shown here with these two How-To Geek webpages. But not all people care for that and prefer for new tabs to be opened at the far right end of the “Tab Bar”.
