Google Chrome Updates, Finally Doesn't Suck in Mac OS X Lion

Google's brought some good news for those of us who've been tolerating Chrome in Mac OS X Lion: they've released an update for proper compatibility. It's not that Chrome didn't work before, but it didn't fully support the new UI and—more importantly—wasn't terribly stable. This latest release promises to fix those things while also adding support for C and C++ code, seeking to blur the lines between web and native desktop applications. All good things for Mac users, we think. More »
Chrome Canary Now Syncing Hand-Typed URLs

Chrome Sync is already pretty full-featured, but one of the few things that's been missing is its ability to sync URLs that users manually type into the Omnibar. Chrome Canary users can now activate that feature, by heading to their about:flags page and enabling it, then checking the box for "Typed URLs" in the Preference page's Sync settings. More »

Google Chrome Hits Version 12, Gets Safer Downloads and Hardware Acceleration, Loses Gears

Google Chrome's stable release has now reached version 12, bringing hardware acceleration for 3D CSS, better in-browser privacy for the built-in Adobe Flash Player, and safer downloads. Chrome 12 will automatically scan downloads to check for malicious files, warning users when they're found. With the new updates comes a loss, though, as Gears is now officially kaput—which means no more offline Gmail access for Chrome users. The update will automatically take place over the next couple of days. [Download Google Chrome via Google Chrome Blog]More »

Try Out Chrome's Space-Saving, Hidden URL Bar in the Canary Build

Netbook users rejoice: Google Chrome's Canary build recently added a new feature that completely hides the URL bar for serious vertical space savings. It's still there, you just have to click on a browser tab (or hit Ctrl+L) and it'll drop down, floating over your webpage. It isn't perfect (as it doesn't allow you to always see the URL you're visiting), but it'll be great on computers for which space is at a premium. This feature's only available in the Windows builds of Canary, and it isn't enabled by default. To enable it, just head to about:flags and toggle "Compact Navigation" on. Restart Canary, right click on the tab bar, then hit "Hide Toolbar" to use the compact version. [via Conceivably Tech] More »
