Google Chrome updates its developer build, now with extensions for Mac

If you're into getting the latest, greatest, most-untested updates to Google's Chrome Browser, the developer channel is the place for you. New updates to Chrome on all platforms just hit the dev channel, with a bug fix that should solve some problems with HTML5 audio and video. The big news is just for Mac users, though: Chrome Extension support is here!

That means OS X users now can share in the epic winningness of Download Squad's 10 must-have Chrome extensions, compiled by our own Sebastian, and a collection of 15+ extensions put together by Lee. Or, if you prefer to find extensions on your own, head over to Google's Chrome Extensions Gallery and start browsing.

History2 extension is a better way to explore your Google Chrome browsing history

While Google's stance on a lot of things is "just search it," that's not always the most comfortable way to do things. For example, when I poke around my browser's history page it's nice to have things sorted and grouped rather than deposited in a large pile.

History2 provides a more flexible way to peruse Chrome's archives. Install the extension and click its icon in your toolbar, and the History2 page above is displayed. It doesn't replace Chrome's built-in page -- you can still access that via ctrl + H or under the wrench menu.

Browser Speed Tests: Chrome 4.0 and Opera 10 Take On All Challengers

Opera 10 final is out, Chrome just turned one year old, and Firefox 3.5 has settled into stability. It's time once again to break out the timers and speed test today's web browsers.

Like all our previous speed tests, this one is unscientific, but thorough. We install the most current versions of each browser being tested—in this case, Opera 10, Chrome's development channel 4.0 version, and the final Firefox 3.5 with security fixes—in a system with a 2.0 GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor and 2GB of RAM, running Windows XP.

We use Rob Keir's tiny timer app to time each browser in the common ways that leave users waiting: a "cold start" right after boot, a "warm start" after already having run once, and waiting on eight tabs to load up. We run each test three times and average the results, tossing out any obvious irregularities.

One year ago, Google Chrome came out of nowhere to re-ignite the browser debate. Today, it's reached (development) version 4.0, and it's anchoring a much-anticipated operating system. Here's a look back at where Chrome's been in 12 short months.

64-Bit Google Chrome Coming to Linux

Linux users are some of the first to tout (or demand) the benefits of 64-bit computing, and it looks like the devotion may pay off. CNET points to Chrome developer mailing list posts indicating that a 64-bit build of Chrome's open-source, development-stage Chromium counterpart is well underway, ahead of versions for Windows or OS X. So while Microsoft and Apple will have built-in 64-bit browsers for their 64-bit systems, Linux gets a helping hand in the browser field from the big G.

Google Chrome Theme Gallery Open for Business, 30 New Themes Await

While themes aren't exactly all about productivity, strictly speaking, it never hurts to spice things up a little bit and make your workspace a little friendlier. To that end, Google Chrome's new Theme gallery adds a little spice to your Chrome installation.

You'll need to be using Google Chrome 3 to install any of the themes, and doing so is as simple as clicking the Apply theme button for any of the visible themes. We've verified the themes as working on both Windows and OS X, and presumably they should be working just fine on Linux, as well. Take a closer look at some of the themes in the gallery below, or just hit up the new gallery and try them out yourself.

Linux Chrome Builds Get Plug-In Support

Linux: If a lack of third-party plug-in support (i.e. Flash) kept you from trying out Chrome on your Linux system, then avoid no longer. The "early developer version" now supports many plug-ins, and they seem to work pretty well.

You'll need to add --enable-plugins to your Chrome shortcut's command line operation to get the "buggy" plug-in support, but it seems worth the hassle, as YouTube and Hulu videos are playing relatively stable and smooth. Google's updated their alpha-level Chrome builds to include the newest start page tweaks as well, and it's generally a browser worth checking out, even if a few standard settings and convenience items are still missing.

Grab an Ubuntu-ready package from the link below, or build the latest Chromium on any Linux system.
